With IWC Excerpt from the Ledger confirming the sale of the present watch to present to Weinstabl, their agent in Bratislava at the time, on 18 August 1942.
Another example of the "Portugieser 1942" model is on permanent exhibition at the prestigious IWC Museum in Schaffhausen. Interestingly it was also sold on 18 August 1942 to Weinstabl, Bratislava. The model is IWC's first wristwatch produced with a pocket watch movement and made in a small edition of 304 examples only. The present watch however is believed to be one of the exceedingly rare "Portugieser 1942" models fitted with a black dial. It is furthermore preserved in very good, original overall condition, the appeal enhanced by the contemporary Gay Frères bracelet.
In the late 1930s, IWC received a rather unusual order from a customer in Portugal who requested a wristwatch with the same size and accuracy of a pocket watch. To comply with his request, IWC chose their at the time slimmest and most reliable calibre 74 movement and cased it in stainless steel.
This revolutionary model immediately became a legend and classic among collectors and was also the obvious choice to celebrate the company's 125th anniversary in 1993 with the launch of a limited edition of total 1000 examples.
