Lot Essay

According to the Archives of Girard-Perregaux, the present watch was manufactured in 2007.

It is number 233 of a limited edition of 249 examples of this model in PVD-coated stainless steel made in 2007, developed together with Laurent Picciotto, long-time friend of Girard-Perregaux and watch connoisseur.

The "R&D 01" model symbolises the importance attached by Girard-Perregaux to the Research & Development sector, as well as its attention to detail. The design of the model is unique for a chronograph, featuring crown and chronograph buttons on the left side of the case rather than on the right. This choice was carefully investigated in conjunction with sportsmen in a variety of disciplines, such as motor racing, and consequently this layout allows optimum use of the chronograph in any competition.

The originality of the R&D 01 model lies in the unusual position of its push-pieces on the left-hand side of the watch, making it very easy for racing drivers to operate the chronograph functions. At the same time, the crown for the revolving bezel, which has a smooth, curved integrated crown-shield, is positioned at 4 o'clock for easy access and wearer comfort.

The smooth, rounded crown-guard, inspired by the shape of a competition cars air intake, protects the date corrector as well as the crown. The manufactory-made movement is visible through the sapphire crystal case back, which is secured with six Imbus screws, of the kind used in competition car construction.
