Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with enamel dial, Louis XV hands, green hour markers, gold stars and numerals in 1896 and its subsequent sale on 22 September 1896. The Extract further confirms the case ornamented with translucent green enamel on a chased background with chimera motif and pearl-set decoration on the bezel and bow.

During the second half of the 19th century, Patek Philippe produced a wide variety of pendant watches decorated with translucent enamel on engine-turned backgrounds. Very few examples were produced with detailed imagery, as is the case with the present lot, which features the mythical chimera.
