Buck Mickel was a passionate collector of many things; fine art, photography, rare timepieces and fast cars. He pursued these interests with great enthusiasm and an almost fanatical pursuit. Arriving from Greenville South Carolina, Buck was a unique presence as he navigated the New York gallery scene. He formed great friendships with the art dealers whom he worked with most closely and listened very carefully to his great friend and advisor Tom Styron, the Director of the Greenville County Museum of Art. This resulted in a sophisticated collection of paintings, photographs drawings and prints including Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sally Mann, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jasper Johns. Buck was also attracted to the figural and textural works of Peter Saul and Robert Overby. Buck maintained the same enthusiasm and connoisseurship for rare watches and Christie's is honored to present a collection of twenty-five watches from Buck Mickel's collection in our Important Watch sale on June 15th. This sophisticated collection reveals Buck's passion and pursuit; he absorbed all that there was to learn about his subject, and found delight in the journey that led to the acquisition.
