Lot Essay

Alice Keppel, eighth daughter of Admiral Sir William Edmonstone (1810-1888), was born in 1869 and spent her early years at the family seat, Duntreath Castle in Stirlingshire. When she was twenty-two she married, the Hon. George Keppel, the 7th Earl of Albemarle (1865-1947).

In 1898 Mrs Keppel first met the future Edward VII, then the 56-year old heir to the throne. She went on to become the king's most famous mistress. Edward VII and Mrs Keppel both used cigarette cases by Fabergé. Over her lifetime Mrs Keppel assembled an impressive collection of objets de vitrine, many of which were enamelled cigarette cases by Fabergé of similar Louis XVI design to the present lot. Mrs Keppel's collection of vertu was sold Sotheby's, Geneva, 11 May 1989.
