Lot Essay

Wang Haipo is the only female portrayer of male leads in Peking Opera in the last forty years of Taiwan's operatic history. Those who are jing, or 'clean', usually sought to play the roles of men with unique characters, such as Judge Bao, the ever upright Guanyu, or Cao Cao, full of tricks and devious plans. As these roles are very difficult to portray, one could see the immense talent of Wang, who was chosen to lead these difficult male characters, gaining popularity over the years.
A fan of opera and the theatre, Zhang Daqian was particularly close to the Jutan group, especially the older generation actors Mei Lanfang, Cheng Yanqiu, Yu Shuyan, Dong Huang and Ma Liangliang. Thus Zhang dedicated this piece to her, especially painting the waves of the sea to signify her name.
