FROM THE COLLECTION OF DR. LING SUN CHU
Dr. Ling Sun Chu was born in Shanghai in 1908. His father, Dr. I-Shou Chu was a traditional Chinese medical doctor, and the young Dr. Ling followed his father's footsteps, receiving Western medical degrees in Shanghai and Hamburg in 1939. Prior to leaving Shanghai for Taiwan in January 1949, Dr. Chu had owned a clinic, a hospital and a pharmaceutical laboratory. After settling his parents and family in Taiwan, he journeyed to New York, providing free clinical services in Chinatown until 1972, then opened an office on the Upper East Side to treat patients with acupuncture. As a pioneer acupuncturist at the time, many Western doctors would refer their patients to him when Western treatments did not work. It was during this time he met and got to know several Chinese artists visiting from Mainland China.
