Lot Essay

Discussing Gill's range of materials in his recorded over 1,000 inscriptions, David Peace has remarked (op. cit., p. 16) that 'there is much variety in his inscriptions. Often the size of letters in a single job changes from roman caps and lower case to italic; and red and blue and gilding are used, especially where there is little light'.
