Château Latour--Vintage 1953
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Vintage note: Although the year did not begin very auspiciously, 1953 is counted a legendary year at many properties. It was the product of a cool spring, conditions that persisted until June. July was rainy, and prospects were even more remote. Fortunately, the weather was perfect in August, and the fine conditions remained through the harvest, which did not begin until October. The wines present a lovely, elegant balance and plenty of sweet fruit. Although they lack the power of the wines from the hot vintage of 1949, they make up for this with a charm that is uniquely their own.
"1953 is one of my all-time favourite vintages. Most recently, an immediately forthcoming, mature, bricky, slightly medical Pauillac bouquet; a sweet, ripe entry, a touch of decay yet a rich drink and still tannic." Michael Broadbent M.W., October 1999
