Between 1920 and 1930, the art world in Japan, which was closely associated with that of Taiwan, returned towards Eastern aesthetic values after much influence from Western art. As Japan was the nearest place to study western art, artists such as Yang Sanlang, Chen Cheng-bo and Liao Chi-Ch'un enrolled in the Kansai Art School and Tokyo Art School, while Chang Wan-chuan first went to the Teikoku Art School (the predecessor of Musashino Art University) and later transferred to the Kawabataga School. In the 1930s, Chang Wan-chuan received awards and honorable mentions in art exhibitions in Taiwan, forming his foundation in the art circle. In 1938, he established Mouve Artists Society, renamed the Taiwan Shaping Art Society in 1941, with Hong Rui-lin, clearly reflecting these artists' emphasis on shapes.
