The tour de force came in the 40s when I saw works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso reproduced in art books over which I poured in the J. N. Petit Library, of which you had to be a member which cost money. And despite the fact I hardly had money to spare [...] I was a member [...], completing my extracurricular education [...]. When I went to Europe, my education became polished.

"He [Souza] has the distinction of being the only Indian artist who has ever exhibited with Picasso. This happened in 1954. The Institute of Contemporary Art, London organised a group show in which he participated along with Picasso, Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland. Later he exhibited with Francis Bacon and Du Buffet [sic]. Also, Souza was among the top four in the fiercely competitive international art contest organised by the Guggenheim Foundation in the '50s. He appears in the International Who's Who and the Oxford Companion on Modern Art."
