Lot Essay

Kronos, the father of Zeus and all gods, reigned supreme over mankind and the universe. Everything to do with time and horology stems from him. Kronos beget everything and in the present collection we are honored to present a representation of "his" horology and its engaging history from the early 17th century to circa 1900.

Almost every item in the collection displays a different complication mastered by the watchmaker's art throughout the ages. Highlights of the collection include but are not limited to: a skeletonized sonnerie clockwatch by Markwick Markham (lot 149), a rare Breguet a tact cylinder watch (lot 160), a Swiss minute repeating perpetual calendar split seconds chronograph watch retailed by Tiffany & Co. (lot 194) and a triple-bridge tourbillon pocket chronometer by Girard-Perregaux (lot 197).

The collection also features a number of lovely automaton watches, some with very fine examples of the enameller's art (lots 168-170, 173-174). This selection is highlighted by a lyre-form musical watch for the Chinese market circa 1820 (lot 174). This incredible example and the entire collection as a whole allow the discerning collector and enthusiast alike to be wholly under the spell of the Kronos collection.
