Lot Essay
Following on from the success of his first publication of an illustrated poem detailing the various misadventures of Rowlandson's fictional character Dr Syntax, a second series, entitled Doctor Syntax in Search for Consolation, was completed in 1820. The poem begins with the sad loss of Dr Syntax's wife leading him to pursue his eccentric travels, providing a humorous satire on various aspects of contemporary England.
The present watercolour illustrates the hero taking part in an auction. The subject matter of a public auction provided Rowlandson with huge potential for depicting diverse characterful members of the public.
