Lot Essay

A preparatory study, with a few differences, for the fresco of the same name in the church of S. Bartolomeo di Porta Ravegnana, Bologna (D.C. Miller, Marcantonio Franceschini, Turin, 2001, p. 132, figs. 34a and 34b). Two more highly finished preparatory drawings for Saint Bartholomew destroying the idols and Saint Bartholomew exorcising a possessed woman, the other frescoes by Franceschini for the chapel, are in the archives of S. Bartolomeo (Miller, op. cit., p. 133, figs. 34c and 34d).

We are grateful to Professor Dwight C. Miller for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph and for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
