Lot Essay

The draughtsmanship of the drawing is close to that of a series by Esaias van de Velde dating from 1615 (see G. Keyes, Esaias van de Velde, Doornspijk, 1984, no. D105). Three drawings from that series were engraved by an anonymous hand and published by Claes Jansz. Visscher (Hollstein 16-23; Keyes, op. cit., A64, A68 and A70). It should be noted that some of the sheets from the series have also been attributed to Jan van de Velde II (1593-1641), Esaias's cousin (M. Bisanz-Prakken, Die Landschaft im Jahrhundert Rembrandts, Vienna, 1993, nos. 20-5).

We are grateful to Peter Schatborn for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
