Lot Essay

'Dan Colen gathers from mass media, environmental experience and sub-cultural language to conjure sublime images form the prosaic. Graffiti, impudent lyrics and allusions to unsavoury haunts resound with a poetic nihilism. Ranging from hyper-realist canvases to text scrawled boards, ready-made objects and trompe l'oeil sculpture, Colen's work offers potential fictions. Infusing the stuff of everyday with reliquary aura, Colen creates a sense of magical realism with the familiar.' (P. Ellis, USA TODAY New American Art from the Saatchi Gallery, exh. cat., Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2006, p. 87).
