Lot Essay

Howard and Sons was one of the most successful and well-known Victorian cabinet-making firms which is now probably most famous for its comfortable and elegant easy armchairs. The firm was begun in 1820 and established in Berners Street by 1854, having already exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition. Amongst several notable commissions, the firm contributed to the furnishing of Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire and Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire.
