Lot Essay

An accomplished pianist himself, much of Richard's artwork was inspired by music.
'Richards would return in drawings and prints to this motif of the female pianist repeatedly, even obsessively, over the years, with varying degrees of formality and informality, of abstract fantasy or lyrical exaggeration.' (M. Gooding, Ceri Richards, Moffat, 2002, p. 89).
