Lot Essay

John Thompson was a self-taught artist whose work only gained its deserved recognition very late in his life, opening his first solo exhibition at the age of 82. The men in his works appear to be waiting, whether it is for a job or a handout. Thompson captures the life of the Northern working man in a manner that some have compared to L.S. Lowry.
