Lot Essay

The present watch is a highly interesting example of a full calendar wristwatch made in Switzerland's horological heartland Le Brassus in the Vallée the Joux by one of the country's foremost watchmakers Paul Piguet-Capt. In quality and style equal to those made by the better known firm of Audemars Piguet, Paul Piguet-Capt's output must however been much smaller.

Paul-Justin-Louis Piguet Capt was born on 5 January 1865, his father Gustave-Henri Piguet managed the family enterprise Piguet Frères where young Paul learned his trade from a very early age. In 1889 he married Marie Capt before opening his own workshop under the name of "Paul Piguet-Capt Brassus (Vallée de Joux), Specialist of half-chronometer watches at very advantageous prices, Supplier of the large watch for the Lausanne shooting contest in 1894". Active until the late 1920s, Paul Piguet-Capt was renowned for his production of commemorative pocketwatches, small coin watches as well as jump hour pocket and wristwatches.

For a detailed biography and images of his work see Horlogers et montres exceptionnels de la Vallée de Joux by Daniel Aubert, Volume II, pp. 128-147.

Similar full calendar wristwatches made by Audemars Piguet in rectangular cases are illustrated in Audemars Piguet by Gisbert L. Brunner, Christian Pfeiffer-Belli, Martin K. Wehrli, first edition, pp. 224 & 115, pl. 299 & 300.
