Lot Essay

This small painting is typical of the small oil sketches executed by Sorolla en plein-air, and commonly referred to as apuntes. These works are characterised by their lively brushwork, and an ability to render atmosphere and colour with a great economy of means; they distil into their simplest form the qualities for which the artist was most famed.

The present lot is inscribed, authenticated and dated by Francisco Pons-Sorolla on the reverse and will be included by Blanca Pons Sorolla in her catalogue raisonné on the artist.
