Lot Essay

The painting is comparable to Winterhalter's other known works of his Italian period, such as Study of an Italian Girl, circa 1833-34 (private collection, exhibited at Winterhalter & the Courts of Europe, 1987/88, no 7); or Young Italian Girl by the Well, circa 1833-34, Freiburg-im-Bresgau, Augustinermuseum (shown at the same exhibition, no. 6), and can therefore be similarly dated.

We would like to thank Eugene von Barilo von Reisberg for confirming the authenticity of the present lot and his assistance in providing the catalogue entry.
