Lot Essay

This oil painting is a variant of a pastel of the same title in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, and is one of several Symbolist works by the artist inspired by the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Indeed, critics often described Lévy Dhurmer's works, which are characterised by an ethereal, other-wordly character, as the visual equivalent of music.

This painting has been examined by Jean-David Jumeau-Lafond, and is sold with a certificate dated 10 November 2004.
