The following work comes from the estate of Hollis Frampton, the noted filmmaker and photographer, who was a good friend of some of the most important artists of the 1960's, including Frank Stella and Carl Andre. Throughout the 1960's, Frampton photographed Andre's work extensively, maintaining a photographic archive, and a voluminous correspondence. Over the course of their long and rich friendship, Frampton acquired the vintage work offered in this sale. The present lot is a fascinating example of the Carl Andre's early collages. The collages were cut up from found scraps of paper or boards and it is interesting to note the gridded composition's relationship to his seminal floor pieces for which Andre is best known.
