Lot Essay

The Beatles were to back American soul singer 'Davy Jones' twice on Friday 8th December, 1961, firstly when he performed at the Cavern's lunch time session, and secondly at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton that evening. Local photographer Dick Matthews, a friend of Sam Leech the promoter responsible for the later concert, was at the Cavern to record the event, and these vintage prints are from his family's archive.
