Property of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, sold for the benefit of American Friends of Le Korsa
American Friends of Le Korsa was established by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation to give support to medical and educational facilities in rural Senegal, West Africa. The needs of a struggling population to combat poverty and illiteracy and improve their everyday living conditions were issues close to the hearts of the Alberses, who experienced great hardship while always treasuring the beautiful possibilities of existence.
AFLK was initially created to help the French non-profit Le Kinkeliba, but the success of our work to date has enabled us to expand our scope and work directly with the communities we serve to provide scholarships, pay for medical treatment for young children who would die without our intervention, obtain healthy water, and assist in a range of other ways. We are in constant contact with our colleagues on the ground to assure that all donations meet their target and have a direct impact. In Pulaar, the dialect of the African language of Fula which is spoken in the region of eastern Senegal where we work, "Korsa" means "love".
Proceeds of the funds raised by the purchase of this painting will go entirely to this life-saving work and help build and maintain two residential studios for visiting artists in Bala, near the border of Mali. At Bala, we are helping create a center that enables mobile medical units to reach smaller villages in one of the hottest and most arid places on the planet. The studios set among baobab trees will enable artists from all over the world to become part of a place where, for all of the hardship, the wonder of everyday life is palpable.
