Lot Essay

Warhol created his Cowboy and Indians series as a full suite of various silkscreen printed images on paper from American history, images that include such diverse subjects as Sitting Bull, Annie Oakley, Plains Indian Shield and Indian Head Nickels. Contingent upon the production of this editioned print series Warhol created only a few select and fully realized paintings on canvas to garner the interest and support of the publisher. The present lot Plains Indian Shield is a particularly successful work that was retained by the publisher and has until now remained in the collection.
