Lot Essay
Hilary Pyle comments on the present work 'The current painting is typical of the artist's style. A slightly dim room with the sash window raised, and a view of the sailor, who is passing, looking round into the open window. The contained interior, contrasted with the light and air of the landscape (undoubtedly Rosse Point), is a common theme throughout Yeats's oeuvre' (H. Pyle, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings Volume I, London, 1992, p. 211, no. 236).
