Lot Essay

According to Kaycee Benton, the present work was painted late in the summer of 1904 and is one of the earliest scenes of Cragsmoor, New York by Charles Courtney Curran. That year markes the first time that Curran and his family rented a summer residence in the artists' colony in Cragsmoor, a small community perched atop the Shawangunk Mountains which abounds with magnificent varieties of vibrantly blooming wild flora and majestic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and Hudson River Valley. After spending their first summer in Cragsmoor, the artist and his wife readily decided to make a permanent summer home and studio there.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being prepared by Kaycee Benton. We wish to thank her for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
