IMPORTANT PAINTINGS FROM SINGAPOREAN COLLECTOR CHEN XIANLIAO
The Singaporean collector Mr. Chen Xianliao originally came from Fujian. His grandfather immigrated to Singapore and managed a palm tree business. His family also owned the Shobang building in Singapore's commercial district. Besides his business ventures, Mr. Chen was very interested in traditional Chinese culture, evident in his collection of Chinese calligraphy, paintings and painted fans.
Many Chinese painters held exhibitions in Singapore, due to its vicinity with China, among them were painters from the Lingnan School of Painting such as Zhao Shao'ang, Yang Shanshen, Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, and Rong Shushi, who regularly exhibited there.
Mr. Chen was known for his hospitality, especially to Chinese painters; he especially maintained a strong relationship with Yang Shanshen. Beside his magnificent collection of Yang Shanshen works, Mr. Chen also owned several masterpieces by Zhao Shao'ang and other well-known painters.

Further Details
Every time when Yang Shanshen came to visit Singapore, Mr. Chen Xinliao would always meet with him and exchange their thoughts and vision about art. They frequently visited Kuala Lumpur and Penang in Malaysia, as well as cities in Indonesia. As a painter, Yang was extremely grateful to Mr. Chen for his support. For many years, Yang Shanshen created paintings for Mr. Chen, including this series, Twelve Animal Signs of the Chinese Zodiac. This series of work was used by Mr. Chen as the image for the calendars that he sent to the residents at the Shobang Building each year. Known for 'drawing from nature' (xiesheng), Yang Shanshen focuses on the honest transmission of form-likeness to the animals he paints. Upholding the Lingnan school's spirit of transformation and reinterpretation of traditional chinese paintings, Yang developed his own unique style that is instantly recognizable. Undergoing many changes in his artistic creation, Yang continuously seeks change in his use of colour, composition and balance of traditional Chinese and new western elements in his paintings - as early as the 1960's, Yang believed that the essence of his paintings had to remain firmly footed in the Chinese manner of brushwork and atmosphere, yet in his execution, he introduced new forms and mannerisms in the depiction of animals which made his works seem refreshing and new. Extrapolating from his two year sojourn in Japan, he assimilated the modern Japanese style of painting which Seiho Takeuchi (1864 - 1942) spearheaded, famous for his depiction of animals and meticulous detail which Chinese art was also known for. This series of Twelve Animal Signs of the Chinese Zodiac was previously exhibited in the show titled "The Art of Yang Shanshen" in Hong Kong Museum of Art in 1981, as well as in "The Paintings of Yang Shanshen" at the National Museum of Singapore in 1989.
