Lot Essay

The dedication Jimei refers to Luo Jimei. Su Yinghui, a researcher at the Dunhuang Academy, recalled the time when Zhang Daqian was at the Mogao caves in Dunhuang, in the Autumn of the thirty second year (of the Republic, 1943):
"Having been employed at the Dunhuang Academy, I often met with its Chairman Chang Shuhong in Chengdu. The Dunhuang Research Centre at the time was based directly opposite the caves. When we arrived at the centre, Luo Jimei and his wife were also there, and coincidentally, staying at the old residence of Zhang Daqian. I immediately exclaimed to them of their good fortune, to sleep under the renderings of Zhang Daqian, and also being in such close proximity to the Dunhuang murals. Luo and his wife heartily agreed with me"

Luo Jimei and his wife worked at the Dunhuang Academy in China before emigrating to the States after 1949. They moved to Taiwan in their later years and was often in touch with Zhang Daqian. These small works by Zhang Daqian not only encapsulated their special friendship but also demonstrated Zhang's range of skill and technique.
