Lot Essay

Cf. Chaffin, A. et F., L'art Kota, Meudon, 1980, fig.166 pour une figure ayant une coiffe comparable à notre exemplaire.
D'après Chaffin (op.cit.), les Bumba sont un peuple attribué aux Kota et aux Masangho. Leurs figures de reliquaires se composent d'un petit visage plaqué ou recouvert de lamelles, d'un cou long, parfois d'un losange. Elles sont placées sur le sac à reliques posé dans un panier. L'auteur cite le reliquaire mbumba offert en 1897 par Charles Roche au Musée de l'Homme à Paris et aujourd'hui conservé au Musée du Quai Branly (inv.71.1897.39.1.1-2).
Le panier de notre reliquaire a été remplacé.
