Lot Essay

Gerald Laing (1936-2011) rose to prominence in 1960s London as a prolific pop-artist producing paintings and screen prints of popular figures, models and even astronauts. After an extended departure exploring the media of sculpture, Laing returned in the relatively recent past to painting and prints of popular figures such as Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and his favourite modern muse - the late Amy Winehouse.
"She is absolutely astounding graphically", Laing explained in a recent interview with the BBC - "a gift to an artist". The title of the present work Belshazzar's Feast makes reference to Rembrandt's picture of the same title in the National Gallery, London.
