Sale Room Notice
We are grateful to Laure Barthélémy-Labeeuw for letting us know the additional provenance for this lot:

Pierre-Jean Mariette; Paris, 15 November 1775 and following days, part of lot 1124.

The present drawing was sketched by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin in his copy of the Mariette catalogue today in the Museum of Fine Art, Boston (P. Rosenberg, Les dessins de la collection Mariette. École française, I, Milan, 2011, p. 149, ill.). The inscription on this drawing appears to be by the same hand as those on two other drawings by Bouchardon in the Louvre (Rosenberg, op. cit., no. F 445) and the Fogg Museum (no. F 447), both from the Mariette collection.

Lot Essay

As indicated by the inscription on the drawing, this is a study for the figure of the young boy blowing a pipe to stoke a fire in L'Hiver, a low relief part of a series of the four seasons ornating the Fontaine de Grenelle, one of Bouchardon's most important works, executed between 1739 and 1745.
