Lot Essay

A similar depiction of Willem van Liere in a double-portrait with his sister Jacoba was sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 10 November 1992, lot 88 (69,000 gilders). Their father, also Willem, was a member of the Admiralty in Amsterdam, and the children were painted with their mother, Maria van Reigersberg, by Adrian Hanneman in 1663 (Voorschoten, Stichting Duivenvoorde). The sitter would later marry Geertruid Anna van Wassenaer on 28 September 1681 in The Hague.
