Lot Essay

Augustus John was raised in Pembrokeshire but felt most at home among the mountains of North Wales. In the years 1911-13 John and his fellow artist James Dickson Innes spent a significant amount of time painting in the Arenig valley. They shared a cottage near Rhyd-y-fen and filled panel after panel with views of this district. The current painting depicts Arenig Fach, a peak in the Arenig range which lies to the north of its parent peak Arenig Fawr, in southern Snowdonia.
