Lot Essay

The current study depicts Ida and Dorelia standing in contrapposto with two children, with Ida holding a baby to the right. John executed several of these ink and wash studies in preparation for a large oil painting entitled Family Group of 1908 which is in the Dublin City Art Gallery. A similar study is illustrated in L. Browse, Augustus John Drawings, London, 1941, no. 6.
