Lot Essay

Muhammad Zeeshan is a relunctant Duchampist, "...balancing precariously on the seesaw between artistic convention and viewerly feeling. While he wishes to project images that have a sensous appeal to a wide audience, he is also tempted to tease the viewer, to employ techniques of surprise and evasion; he desires, simultaneously, to console and shock his parent culture. Fundamentally, Zeeshan wants their pleasure snatched from the vine like stolen fruit." (A. Akhtar, Muhammad Zeeshan: Profane Illuminations, exhibition catalogue, 2008, unpaginated)
