Lot Essay

Inspired by the ancient Persian ceramics jars of which he is an avid collector, the internationally acclaimed artist Farhad Moshiri is fascinated by archaeology and Iranian popular culture. With his Jars series, of which the present work is a fine example, he plays around with the texture of the painting in order to attain gently crackled surfaces reminiscent of ancient Sassanid ceramics. The result is a delicate and elegant jar evoking history yet deliberately modern. Through his works, Farhad Moshiri alludes to the traditional Iranian culture and aesthetics while hinting to the consumerist and globalized culture of the West.
