Lot Essay

Born in New York City, Shore initially shot in black-and-white before taking up colour photography in 1973. Thereafter he produced pictures that played an important role in establishing colour as a valid medium for fine art photography.

In 1971, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York exhibited Shore's photographs in the institution's first-ever single artist show by a living photographer. This was followed four years later by an exhibition of his colour photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Shore is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1975) and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1974 and 1979). His work can be found in most major museum collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The Museum of Fine Art, Houston.
