Lot Essay

"Color is born of the interpretation of light and dark... Color is a firing of the eye... Color is a pattern that plays across the membrane of the mind... Color is a series of harmonies everywhere in the universe being divine whole numbers lasting forever adrift in time... Color is light on fire... " (S. Francis "Aphorisms" as quoted in P. Hulten, Sam Francis, exh. cat., Germany, 1993, pp. 37-38).
