Lot Essay

In 1980, the year of her fiftieth birthday, Frink produced a number of sculptures of horses and dogs, including the life-size piece Horse, commissioned by the Earl of March for Goodwood Racecourse in Sussex.

The present work is the only recumbent piece produced in 1980, and the sensuality and sense of freedom that the sculptor achieves in the present work is in contrast with the other standing and static pieces produced in the same year. The spirit, personality and mystery of the horse, the most powerful element of Frink's most successful animal pieces, is fully realised here.
