Lot Essay

When discussing his recent works in 2003, Alan Davie said: 'The titles enable the spectator to 'ENTER' the work from an 'irrational' view-point as it were. One becomes 'LOST' in the image and is compelled to recreate 'meanings' for one's self and thus enter a world of painting of one's own making ...' (quoted in exhibition catalogue, Alan Davie, recent paintings and gouaches with an edited correspondence between Alan Davie and James Hyman, London, James Hyman Gallery, 2003).
