Lot Essay

The present work depicts the front porch of the home of Joseph Messersmith, Andrew Wyeth's neighbor, in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Messersmith's son, Allen, who lived in the house until his death in 2011, was a close friend of Wyeth's and modeled for several of the artist's works.

This watercolor will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
