Lot Essay

On a romantic trip to South Africa in November 1975, Richard Burton surprised Elizabeth Taylor with the 23.60 carats fancy brown-orange diamond. The couple married for the second time and Richard wanted to celebrate this occasion with the purchase of this African diamond to symbolise their renewed union. Elizabeth was delighted but felt that she should rather spend the funds on a humanitarian cause and they decided to return the ring in order to fund a hospital in Botswana.
