Lot Essay

The present work is the original watercolour for an engraving entitled The village cemetery (see M. Kiselev, Maria Iakunchikova, Moscow, 1979, p. 56, illustrated, p. 167). Iakunchikova, keen to explore the possibilities of colour engraving, was one of the first Russian artists to experiment with this medium.
