Lot Essay

Leaving his homeland the Soviet Union in 1919, Gregorio Sciltian lived in Vienna, Paris, Milan and Venice before settling permanently in Rome. In the 1930's Sciltian developed his typical style from his early works, influenced by Cubism, to an Old Master-like style with clear forms, realism and fine psychological nuances, which evokes a sense of alienation. Italian surrealist Giorgio de Chirico (1844-1883) called this type of works 'Sciltian's theatre'. The present lot combines the artist's favorite subjects, such as still life, genre and hints of the pittura metafisica, a style developed at the time by De Chirico which was an great inspiration for Sciltian.
