Lot Essay

The present lot was executed while Georges Vantongerloo was involved in the Abstract-Création movement, which he co-founded in 1931 with Auguste Herbin and Jean Hélion to promote abstract art when contemporary art in Paris had turned towards Surrealism and other representational art.

The present lot is a preliminary study for 'Fonction de lignes, courbes et droites' (no. 122, see: Ceuleers, 1996, p. 141).
