Lot Essay

In Rindu Booming (Missing Booming) (Lot 2391), Goni, Samsul Arifin's iconic doll, is seen resting as though due to sheer exhaustion and the pressures of the education system in Indonesia where students worry school fees and economic situations. The emptiness of the wall is balanced by graffiti-like doodles; the strokes are irregular but strong and intense as painted in spontaneous frustration. This little spur of emotion causes the inscribed words 'Rindu Booming' stand out starkly, in contrast to the rest of the canvas.
