AN ASIAN OVERSEAS COLLECTION
These two Xu Beihong paintings were acquired by Mr. Tse Chun Cheung, formerly known as the "Hong Kong Dessert King", owner of a well-known chain of dessert shops.
Mr. Tse and his wife are now retired and living in Singapore. The couple have spent most of their time as private collectors in various fields including Chinese modern and classical paintings, porcelain vases and snuff bottles. They have extensive connections with other collectors and some famous artists in Singapore and Mainland China. Mr. Tse acquired a number of Xu's paintings through a connection of family members of the famous Mr Tan Kah Kee, who was a folk hero in Singapore, South-East Asia and China. Mr. Tan was the only Chinese to ever have single-handedly founded a private university (Amoy University) and became the rallying point of Overseas Chinese opposition to the Japanese invasion of China and South-East Asia. He mixed on equal terms with colonial officals, Chinese generals and Chiang Kai Shek and Mao Zedong and played a leading role within the community of Overseas Chinese in South-East Asia.
